How to Take
Notes
- Use notebook paper for notes. Write your name on the top of
each page.
- Write the bibliographic information at the top of each page.
You must be able to identify the source of all your information.
Keep track of pages or paragraphs for parenthetical
citations.
- DO NOT TAKE NOTES IN COMPLETE SENTENCES. Read the information.
Write in your OWN words. Never copy what you read. Condense your
information. Use abbreviations. Choose main ideas.
- Xeroxed copies of sources are NOT notes. They are copies. You
must still take notes on your notebook paper.
- Keep organized.
- When you have completed each page, go back over your notes. In
the margin write the main ideas of your work. This will be very
helpful later when you are ready to write your rough
draft.
- Use the outline form or lists or graphic organizers to take
notes.
